How to print alphabet tracing worksheets
- Keep the ready-made alphabet, or edit the text box: one line per page, for example only the letters your child finds tricky.
- Pick print or cursive and the letter size for your child’s age.
- Download the PDF: seven pages cover A to Z with capitals and lowercase side by side.
Order for teaching letters
Many handwriting programmes group letters by the movement used to form them rather than in alphabet order, so children practise one motion at a time:
| Group | Letters | Movement |
|---|---|---|
| Long ladder | l, i, t, u, j, y | Straight down, flick or hook |
| Curly caterpillar | c, a, d, o, g, q, e, s, f | Start like a c, curving anticlockwise |
| One-armed robot | r, n, m, h, b, k, p | Down, back up the same line and over |
| Zigzag monster | z, v, w, x | Diagonal lines |
To practise one group, type its letters on a line, for example c a d o g q, and print that page several times.
Making practice stick
- Start every letter at the green dot and follow the dots in one movement.
- Use the solid first row as the model; trace slowly, then try the empty rows freehand.
- Laminate a sheet or put it in a plastic sleeve and reuse it with a dry-wipe pen.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages is the alphabet?
Seven pages by default, four letter pairs per page. Edit the text box to choose different letters or to put one letter per page.
Capitals or lowercase first?
Many teachers start with capitals because they use straight lines and are easier to form, then move to lowercase. These sheets show both side by side (Aa Bb…), or type only the ones you want.
Can I make number tracing sheets?
Yes. Type numbers instead of letters, for example 1 2 3 4 5 on one line and 6 7 8 9 10 on the next.
Why practise with start dots?
Starting each letter in the right place builds the habit of correct letter formation, which makes handwriting faster and neater later.
