How to print passport photos at home or at a photo shop
- Take the photo against a plain white or light wall, facing the camera, with even light and no shadows. Ask someone else to take it from about 1.5 m (5 ft) away.
- Choose the photo size your passport, visa or form asks for.
- Position the photo: drag and zoom until the face fills the dashed oval, from chin to the top of the hair.
- Choose the sheet: 4 × 6 photo paper for a shop or kiosk, A4 or Letter for a home printer.
- Download and print. Order the JPG as a normal 4 × 6 print, or print the PDF at 100%. Cut on the thin lines.
Common passport photo sizes
| Size | Used for (examples) | Per 4 × 6 print | Per A4 sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35 × 45 mm | UK, Schengen/EU, Pakistan, India, Australia passports | 8 | 30 |
| 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | US passport and visa, some Indian visa forms | 6 (no spacing) | 15 |
| 50 × 70 mm | Canada passport | 2 | 16 |
| 33 × 48 mm | China visa | 6 | 32 |
Counts use the default 2 mm spacing except where noted. Rules change, and some countries now only accept digital photos for online applications, so always check the official guidance for your document.
Why a 4 × 6 print saves money
A standard 4 × 6 photo print costs a small fraction of a studio passport-photo set, and one print holds 6 to 8 photos. The JPG from this tool is exactly 1200 × 1800 pixels with 300 dpi stored in the file, which is what photo printers expect, so each photo comes out at true size. When ordering, turn off any “borderless” or “fill” option that would crop or enlarge the picture.
What makes a passport photo get rejected
- Shadows on the face or background, or a background that isn’t plain and light
- Head too small or too large in the frame (use the oval guide)
- Glasses with glare, hats, or hair covering the eyes (rules vary for religious head coverings)
- Filters, beauty modes or heavy editing
- An old photo: most countries want one taken in the last 6 months
Frequently asked questions
How many passport photos fit on a 4×6 print?
8 photos of 35 × 45 mm, with or without space between them (the sheet is turned sideways). For 2 × 2 inch photos: 6 with no space (cut on the lines), or 2 with spacing.
Why download a JPG instead of a PDF?
Photo kiosks and print shops print image files on 4 × 6 photo paper. The JPG is exactly 1200 × 1800 pixels at 300 dpi, so it prints at true size; ask for no borderless cropping.
Will the photos be the exact size?
Yes, when the sheet prints at 100%. On a home printer choose “Actual size”; at a shop ask for a standard 4 × 6 print without cropping or enlarging.
Does it check that my photo meets passport rules?
No. It crops and lays out your photo at the exact size; it doesn’t check the background, expression, glasses or lighting. Read your country’s official photo rules, and if in doubt ask the passport office or a photo studio.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Cropping and the print sheet are made in your browser.
